In functional medicine and integrative care, we focus on therapies that support the body’s natural balance while also addressing measurable risk factors. One supplement gaining increased attention is Nattokinase. I am very excited about the findings in this study and feel that we can attack Atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in the arteries, NATURALLY.

Nattokinase is a naturally occurring enzyme derived from natto, a traditional Japanese fermented soybean food. It supports the body’s ability to break down fibrin (a protein involved in clot formation) and helps promote healthy blood flow, vascular flexibility, and balanced inflammation.

Atherosclerosis—the buildup of plaque in the arteries—is a major contributor to heart attacks and strokes. Lifestyle factors such as poor diet and inactivity accelerate this process. However, emerging research suggests that targeted interventions, including properly dosed Nattokinase, may help slow or even reverse aspects of plaque progression by eating away at the plaque in the arteries.

In a recent study, participants taking 10,800 FU daily experienced a 36% reduction in arterial plaque, measured by ultrasound. This outcome demonstrates significant, meaningful reductions in cardiovascular risk.

Additionally, long-term observational data from Japan (following nearly 30,000 individuals over 16 years) found that regular consumption of Nattokinase was associated with a 43% lower risk of death from heart disease. Interestingly, this benefit was not observed with non-fermented soybean foods, suggesting a unique role for Nattokinase.

What Does the Research Show?

A large 12-month clinical study involving over 1,000 individuals with mild cholesterol elevations or early plaque buildup found that a daily dose of 10,800 FU (fibrinolytic units) was associated with:

~18% reduction in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol

~16% reduction in triglycerides and total cholesterol

~16% increase in HDL (“good”) cholesterol

Improved arterial health, including:

~36% reduction in plaque burden

~22% reduction in vessel wall thickness

Therapeutic/clinical dosing is a key factor found in this study: a minimum of 10,800 FU is necessary to see these results. Lower doses (2,000–3,600 FU/day), commonly found in supplements, did not produce meaningful changes—highlighting the critical importance of therapeutic dosing.

An Integrative Approach

Nattokinase is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive, personalized strategy. In clinical practice, outcomes appear stronger when combined with regular physical activity (e.g., daily walking) and metabolic support (weight management, blood sugar control). Combining clinical doses of Nattokinase with Vitamin K2 demonstrated a synergistic effect in improving outcomes.

Safety and Tolerability

In the available research, Nattokinase was well tolerated, with no significant adverse effects reported at studied doses.

Key Takeaways

Nattokinase represents a promising adjunct in cardiovascular prevention and management, particularly when used at evidence-based doses and combined with lifestyle and metabolic interventions.

The benefits shown from this study could reduce or even eliminate the need for statins. I am not a fan of statins and have worked for years to get my patients off of them. The side effects can be crippling. Nattokinase is a safe and effective alternative that may produce the same, if not better, results.

Nattovena

I am pleased to offer Nattovena in my Office. Nattovena is a 4,000FU Nattokinase. 3 capsules per day exceeds the necessary therapeutic levels found in this study.
